Continuing Education Requirements in New York
NYS Department of State, Licensing Services
Real estate licensees are required to complete 22½ hours of Department of State approved continuing education every two years within their license renewal period.
Any salesperson who successfully completes an approved broker qualifying course (which requires passing the final exam) will receive credit for continuing education for their current two-year sales license renewal period.
Proof of Course Completion
Upon course completion, real estate licensees will be required to sign and date a statement that they have personally completed each module of the learning program. Upon receipt of your signed statement, a record of your course completion will be submitted to the Division of Licensing Services for the State of New York. A Certificate of Completion will be forwarded to you within three weeks.
CE Exemptions
The following licensees are exempt from this education requirement:
- Attorneys admitted to the New York State bar who hold a real estate broker license.
- Licensed brokers who have 15 consecutive years of combined licensure as a salesperson and a broker and who are actively engaged in the real estate business as a real estate broker at the time of renewal. The burden of proof of 15 years of licensure lies with the broker. Please note that the failure to renew a license on time will be considered a break in service and the "consecutive years" will begin again with the new license date. This means that the licensee will have to resume taking continuing education for another 15 years.
